Tank buying tips? | |
illustrae Fish Addict Posts: 820 Kudos: 876 Registered: 04-May-2005 | There are 2 lfs in my area, and they both jack up their prices for equipment ridiculously high. I am a mail-order fiend most of the time anyway, but I was surprized that even with shipping costs, the equipment I buy online still costs a lot less than it would in the lfs. My question, though, is about buying the tank itself and what people's experience has been with buying tanks online and whether it's just better to try to find one at the lfs. I mail-ordered my acrylic tank, and it was expensive, but not prohibitively so. I'm thinking of mail-ordering an All-Glass aquarium now, and I'm wondering if that will ship as well without being ridiculously expensive. I'm especially concerned about the wisdom of mail-ordering tanks as they get larger (50+ gallon tanks). Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

I will have them deliver it and bring it to its final location in the house (ba order delivery people would do that. Given that the tank I want would be over 200 US-pounds, and 72in long (Tessa's should be around 160), I don't want to take the responsibility for it until the last possible moment. For this I am willing to spend more money on the tank. An added bonus is that the lfs is making some money of me and as such might be a little friendlier the next time I come in and ask them one of my "silly" questions. I know I did not give you an answer to your question, but I hope that my reasons might be of any help to you. Ingo |

How come the delay in shipping, and is it costing you an arm and a leg?The delay in shipping is because of plans I need to carry out before putting the tanks in. If you read this .[link=http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/General%20Freshwater/59219.html?200505190652]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/General%20Freshwater/59219.html?200505190652" style="COLOR: #FFFF00[/link] thread that I posted earlier it will explain all. It cost me alot for the delivery yes because it was so far away but I need to have custom made tanks so I had no choose really. The shipping is costing. £120 and for the two tanks it is costing £276 Not sure how much that is in your currency. http://www.greenspersonalprinting.com/ |

I'm kindof in the middle of nowhere with no car, hence why mail-order is the best thing in the world, as far as I'm concerned. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

They should call you before delivery to ensure that someone is home to "receive" it off the truck. Have the stand in place first. The tank should come encased inside a wooden form. Set a couple of 2'2s or 2x4s on the floor first, and then have the work crew (assistants) set the crated tank on the 2xs. Remove the crate from the tank, and then because the tank is sitting on the 2xs you can easily get your fingers under the tank to lift it up to its final position without having to tilt (torque) the tank in one direction and then another or lift one end first. If you have any First Aid training, you know you should have your assistants spaced along the length of the tank on both sides, as if the tank were a backboard. Everyone grab the tank and lift equally, on the count of... Frank Last edited by FRANK at 20-May-2005 17:06 -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |
