The fluval alone was taking care of that tank for the past 3 months or so. I find the fluval works great, but I am very impressed with this new eheim. Its an awesome filter. So much media and so much choice. Silent too. I like both Fluvals and Eheims, but even the Fluval 404 is only good up to 75g tanks, whereas my Eheim 2217 is good up to 165g. Good filters. In addition, I want the ability to reduce the flow as low as 5x the tank size. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

I run them on all my tanks including two planted discus tanks without any problems. I do use two sponges in each unit without any carbon as I don't see a need for carbon unless you are removing meds. In addition to the AquaClears, I do run the Eheim Pro II on one discus tank. It is silent, dependable, and has great flow but I consider it a major PIA to clean. On the bright side I clean it religiously only every 6 months. I strongly recommend a "pre-filter" for the unit or any cannister. I use a sponge from Penguin powerhead on my intake. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

You would be better off with a hang on the back filter. Cascade makes a great filter, so does Marineland in their Penquin Line. I would avoid aquaclears though, they need to be cleaned basically every other day, and their flow through rate is low, while their flow-over (water not being passed through the filter material) rate is high. Whispers are no better. You could also go for an internal filter. Both Fluval and Eheim make internal filters that are very good. Check on EBAY for Eheim Aquaball Internal Filters. They seem to be the best internal filter. Also, you dont want one too large, go for the minis, all fish will have a hard time swimming under a higher current that a larger filter puts out. They are usually reserved for larger tanks because the flow is so strong. In a 10g with an Eheim canister the fish would be reacting scenes from Twister. |

The thing about Eheims is that they have so much pressure inside the canisters that they literally demolish any waste that comes in. Then they provide so much area for bacteria to colonize that the small particles of waste are consumed very very quickly. In my opinion there is nothing that even comes close to competing with them. |

It is the best filter I have ever used. It is the old story quality = $$$ both those models are fully made in Germany.
