I have an Eheim 2213 canister filter in my 160L tank, and currently the spraybar is right on the water level (ie. no visible surface agitation) b/c there's a fixed lid on the back of the tank. While this makes for a nice and quiet operation, I'm concerned that my tank doesn't get enough oxygen b/c I read somewhere (probably on an HOB filter manual) that the aeration is created by surface agitation (I don't have any airstone inside the tank either). Am I right to be concerned or just being paranoid (my fish seems ok)? For me to get the splash effect means I need to lower the water level quite a bit, and I usually keep my water level about 2" from the top. Wondering where other people place their spraybar?

Thanks much!

Upi,

Gas exchange occurs at the water surface. As long as the surface moves, you will have gas exchange. On my Eheim , I have had the spraybar "shower" the water, push water down the back side of the tank to flush deletrius forward, beneath the surface and now I have it perpindicular to the substrate to provide a "flow" around the tank. All work and all are equally effective as long as the surface moves.

It doesn't have to move fast, just not be still.

Here is how my Eheim Spray bar is set up. The photo was taken to show how it set up but the actual water level is usually 15mm above the spray bar.

I also have two 4ins Ceramic airstones for the added airation.

Sorry my first thought when I began to read this was throw the thing away

OK that said, I have my spray bar (eheim 2213) at the top of the tank, with the spray facing outwards, but is actually below the water level at all times...

I guess keith and I are a lot alikei also have the extra airstones in the tank (long ones) for added aeration, and water movement...I am one of those that likes the looks of the bubbles in the background and my corries tend to love to play in them:%)

I keep mine underwater like you do :-)

But I have airstones though...when I forget to top up my tanks the water speys down but either way the fish love it (they swim by the flow when its under water & by the ripples when its not).

Why not get a cheep (9.99) air pump, (30p) hose & (£1) airstone... it will put your mind at rest, looks good & you'll always get 1 fish that does the 'finding nemo' BUBBLES thing to keep you amuesed.
