I had a filter for a 55 gallon, I don't remember what filter it was but it came in the kit from wal-mart. Anyways, today it was working fine one moment and I look over ten minutes later and it had completely stopped working. It wasn't making any sounds and had quit pumping water. I went and bought a Penguin 330 because I have this filter on another tank and really like it. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knew what if there was someway to fix the broken filter. My best guess is that it got sand stuck in it somehow/where. I don't want to throw it away if I can salvage it for use in a future tank. TIA
Jen

unless a power surge zapped it, your assumption about blockage (or build up) is most likely correct. strip down the filter completely. use q-tips and whatever else is necessary to clean every moving part of the filter. mine sometimes get slimey goo build up every few months or so. looks nasty, but easy to correct.

good luck.

Thanks for your help.
It had only been running for about a month and was on the opposite side of the heater, so I don't think that was the problem.
I'll try and use the q-tip to clean it all out and see if that works. Anything is worth a try. If worse comes to worse, I'll just throw it out, I was just hoping to save it if at all possible.
Thanks again!
Jen

I suggest you take it back wal-mart and tell them you are not happy and that it should last more than 30 days.

Just a thought anyway.

Jen,

Definitely check the impeller. I would pull the impeller from the housing well and clean the impeller magnet and blades with a tooth brush. Use a "tube brush" to scrub the impeller well to eliminate any grunk.

After you reassemble the unit. Fill the unit with water and test it outside of your aquarium. You should feel the power come on if you hold the unit. If the impeller does not spin, use a q-tip to get it started.

Another possibility besides grunk is that the impeller is separated from the magnet. Magnet spins, impeller doesn't. You then need a new impeller.

yesterday my filter has given a similar problem. I have a Resun 900L internal power filter for 30 gal. I wonder if you have heard the name... but its a wellknown brand here.
I cleaned all the parts with impeller, But could not remove the impeller from the shaft as i thought i would break everything.
Should I break the seal and remove all the parts or take it to the LFS if they can do something about it ?. I have to buy a new one today as my tank is without filter for more than 24 hours.

Check your directions. If it indicates that the impeller can be removed go ahead. Of course, if not take it the lfs and see if they can do it.

I took the filter to the LFS. The guy at the store tested it and to my surprise! it was working. I donno what went wrong with it. I still bought a bigger one of the same make and kept the earlier one as spare. The tank should be much better with the new filter.

Of course, you could use them both! That way, if one should stop functioning, the other unit is in place and operating. I like having system backups. I always like to use two heaters and two filters just in case one blinks out!
