my filter is rattling/shaking every once in a while, and the normal humming gets louder along with the shaking... i have no clue what it is! its not a lot but enough to alarm me...

it is a penguin 330 bio-wheel, brand new, only been running for like 3 weeks. I even took all the parts out and put them back in and everything looks fine... that was like 20 minutes ago. its seems ok right now but is there something specific i should check for or something i should do if the problem comes back? even if it doesnt come back, any ideas what might have been causing it? (for future reference)

Check the impellor, sometimes it can get out of place and viberate.

I would not be worried what is wrong with it, just take it back and request a full refund or a replacement. My first canister (Shark) had a faulty impella and would go crazy every now and then. I adventually got a full replacement.

When you take a filter apart it sometimes happens that not everything goes back in exactly the right way. You can try taking it apart again, you could also (depending oh how possible it is for you to get to the LFS) try taking it back for an exchange.
If you have a sand substrate it is possible that one teeny tiny piece of sand is messing the filter up for you....that's what went wrong with mine. Be sure to cover the intake.

I found on my 330 that sometimes the top piece where the inlet tube comes in needs adjustment. By pressing on it or moving it around a bit it would quiet down. Or, like mentioned above, you may have a bad impeller.

I've had mine going on three years and have been very happy with it, quiet and reliable. In fact I just replaced an aqua clear 150 with a penguin 125 on my 20.
