Ok so can anyone tell me about how these all work? I see that you hook it up through an air pump but what do you put in the thing? Carbon? I am just looking at different products right now for my 40 gal that I will be setting up and planting in a couple of months. Thanks for the help!!

I believe you put some polyester floss in the bottom to trap debris, and a layer of carbon on top of that for chemical filtration. If it's large enough, I'd use the floss just around the edges where the vents are, and fill the whole thing with ceramic bio-media for biological filtration, bypassing the carbon altogether unless you're medicating the tank or using other chemicals that you need to get rid of.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

The unit is technology from 50 years ago. Back then the base was filled with carbon and floss provided mechanical filtration. These units and no knowledge of the cycle helped us kill a lot of fish.

Today, I would fill the base with media for bio filtration such as ceramic rings or sintered glass. Above that I would place mechanical media such as floss or foam that is cut to fit. The airstone provides water movement much the same as the current sponge filters.

You can fill it up with a layer of carbon, a layer fo ceramic cells & some polyester floss. I think it's like a box filter.
