T/A Mega Fish Posts: 942 Kudos: 1796 Registered: 20-Feb-2004 | I voted for hang on power filters. They are cheap and very efficient. The cost of canister filters just doesn't match up with the over all cost of most freshwater tanks. |

bigchris Fingerling Posts: 36 Kudos: 29 Votes: 0 Registered: 02-Mar-2005 | I currently run a eheim cannister on my tank which is really great, but the fluval Biolife wet/dry i had previously did a similar job, was better placeable (with my awkward lid) for circulation and also removed the ugly film on top of the water because it protruded slightly. The eheim was essential in my case though, because the tank is next to my bed and it's much quieter. |

hzrds Hobbyist Posts: 60 Kudos: 44 Votes: 1 Registered: 08-Jun-2005 | I've had great results with HOB filters. I've heard cannisters work great but like most people, I don't have the money to go and buy one so I work with what I've got. |

Bob Wesolowski Mega Fish Posts: 1379 Kudos: 1462 Registered: 14-Oct-2004 | I love having a minimum of two filters on a tank. Ideally one would be a HOB and the other a cannister. If I had to have one filter, I would choose a HOB. Easy to maintain and to access. I favor AquaClear because of the design and the media options. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

poisonwaffle Mega Fish Posts: 1397 Kudos: 591 Registered: 11-Feb-2003 | *votes HOB* The best IN GENERAL, IMO. Cannisters are better, but they're rather expensive I was too cheap to buy a cannister, so I built one...it's a great filter, but it's got a little pump, so all it does is get the water really clean...the 3 HOB's on the same tank do all the big stuff |

divertran Fish Addict Posts: 784 Kudos: 469 Votes: 165 Registered: 14-Nov-2004 | I use HOBs exclusively. Yes, cannisters are better filters as far as filters go, but for the cost and maintenance I prefer the HOB. My tanks are small tho, a 30, 10 and 5, any larger I think I'd have to go cann. |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | The best filter regardless of cost I'd say a cannister. The best filter for a good price an HOB/power filter. They can do a good job for alot less money but if I had the cash I'd do my tanks all in cannisters. |

Most are even customizable, they get my vote! Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

On the indoor pond I'd use a combo of both as I like the soothing sounds of falling water . ^_^[hr width='40%'] The life, the love, You die to heal. The hope that starts, The broken hearts... They are a bit expencive, but worthed. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Does not interfear with the aquscape when doing any maintenance on the filter. Down side good cainsters eg Eheim are expensive but are considered the best on the market today.
