the ballast should have a wiring diagram on it. are you doing a diy light setup, or repairing an existing hood?

Being a father of two Electrictions. There is only one safe answer if you dont no/or qualified dont touch. Yes it is easy for any one to say do this and that, but remember you are only allowed to make onr mistake with electricity.

Hi,
Actually, you need several parts to build an aquarium
light.
Assuming flourscent, You need:
A water proof housing
Sockets (two for each light)
Rubber insulated wire, preferably three different colors
bulb(s)
switch(s)
Ballast(s)
Starter(s)
wire nuts
fan (sometimes needed)
Starter socket(s)
a piece of glass the full dimentions of the hood
to keep the water, and condensation from the tank out
of the inside of the reflector.

As was mentioned, IF you don't know anything about
electricity, THEN it is best to purchase a commercially
made light. OR have an electrician wire the parts
together. Preferably an electrician who also has
aquariums. That way he/she will be familiar with the
special problems encountered with aquatics. (filter
return, air stones, condensation, etc.)

As it suggets, it'd be in your best interest to purchase a timer to plug the unit into so it will go on/off at desired points. This benefits you by letting you not forget to turn them on/off and your fish will benefit by having a reliable day/night cycle.

You'll also need the bulbs themselves.
