Hi there, I am buying a house soon with my brother and will also get a large aquarium to go with it. Unfortunately I am quartered off to upstairs.

As far as I know the floor is wood under the tiles and I would like to know if anyone has some sort of formula to fish tank weight once it is full of water.

Well, water weighs about a kilo a liter, plus the weight of the decorations and substrate, and the weight of the tank itself.. you can you usually figure on roughtly 4.5 kilos per gallon, or about 1 to 1.5 kilos per liter.

You mean make that 4.5 kilos per gallon- not liters. At 4.5 kilos per liter my 55g tank would weigh over 2059 lbs!!!

a 8x2x2foot tank was going to weigh 3.5 tonnes by the first numbers . I didnt think that sounded right.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Before live rock, reef tanks came into popularity,
the "Rule of Thumb" for tank weight was to figure
an average of 10 pounds/gallon. That allows the
8 pounds/gallon for the water and figures about
2 pounds for the gravel. Even with today's planted
tanks, it's still a good average.

Just finished going thru a bit of calculations when I was putting the "pond" in my living room....don't know if you already have the tank picked out or not, but it would likely be worth the effort to get one with a larger footprint. Don't forget that a good stand will also distribute the weight.
