In Victoria where I live at the moment there are massive bushfires some have joined together to form several fronts the total area at the moment is above 800 000 hectare =
1 976 843.051 737 323 acre. Smoke has blocked out the sun 100s of Klm from the fires. This has caused health problems for many. My eyes have not stopped burning for at least a week. Smoke is in our home and we are about 200 klm from the fires
There has been temps in the mid 40C and last night 21Dec we had our highest recorded night temp I think it was about 30c.
Xmas day/boxing day 25-26 Dec it is expected to snow that is correct in the high country (where the fires are) Where I live we are expecting the coldest xmas day on record 16c
Today in New South Wales north of Victoria they had a massive hail storm today .

Here is a photo I took from our home mid/latr afternoon about a week ago.

That is a better photo than I managed to take Keith. Its eerie seeing the sun shining though smoke like that.
My kids have had troubles sleeping at night, coughing and dry thoats. It seems to have cleared for now.
Crazy weather.

Aww Lindy do you think an air purifier might help? I've been having trouble at night too....but that's from bringing boxes down from the attic and getting too much dust in the air...If I'd have taken a pic it might have looked like that .

It's been pretty odd around here too....we were in the 70's a few days ago (around 20C) and now we're back to the 40's (around 4C)...

No wildfires though, *sadly puts the marshmallows away*...and no snow storms either *puts hot coco away with a lump in her throat*

very nice pic though keith, except for the how and why you got it .

^_^

Babelfish.

It is smoke and comes through ever where there is basically no escape. If you have a tiled roof it comes through all the over lapping gaps.
Too many years ago I worked in a retail store (still doing my trade) and over one week end when the shop was completly closed on the monday the shop stunk of smoke. I have had to have a hotel room recleaned because some one had left the window open just a little..
Last night Fri they had some rain and this did help they are still expecting snow on the 26th. If the rains had not come it would have smouldered for at least three months.
We had visibility of about 5klm driving during during the day with car light on not so much to look ahead but for the drivers behind.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

If this year wasn't a call to action, I don't know what was!

One can only hope tiny
Knowing how many attacks I've gotten from people on this site for my car I don't hold much hope. I find it sad that people can continue to be in denial about such a real problem.

And you aussies need to stop hogging the snow it's supposed to be ours this time of year!

Hey keithgh

Has the smoke irritant cleared from your home yet? I hope so, especially considering your eye issues earlier this year. The last thing you need is something irritating them.

I sympathise fully with you. I live in a bush fire area in Sydney, NSW, but luckily none this season (or for the last couple of years - although the area has been struck twice in the 12 years we've been here). The last time fires were in our area, the fire reached the end of our street (about 6 houses down). Each time the end house needed to be water bombed by the helicopters, a fire truck parked outside our house (which is opposite a reserve) & would sit there in case of flying embers. No houses in our street ever ended up catching alight & we were really well protected by the fire fighters.

It's pretty scary though. Especially the time I got the call from school to say the school was being evacuated & the kids sent home (I was an over an hour away at work, in the city). By the time I tried to drive into my area, they were no longer letting people or cars in - so it was a very stressful time.

Cheers
TW
