How can you tell if a rock is good or bad for your tank? I have seen a thread like this before, I just can't remember what I read. I plan on going to the river bed here where I live and find a couple of good rocks for my tank. I just need to know how to test them.

Take a teaspoon of vinegar and pour it on a clean rock. If the rock reacts, you may not want to use it. "React" means that you get a little fizz.

In most cases, you want rocks in your aquarium to be inert. That is, they will not affect the hardness or pH of the water. Secondarily, you should be sure that your rocks do not have sharp edges and are firmly cushioned by the substrate.

Other things to consider is the area where you collect your rocks: Is there a chance of pesticides or other chemicals having leeched into the ground? These residues are pretty impossible to get rid of, though you can coat the rock in aquarium safe epoxy resin to seal them in if you're worried about something like that.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

To be on the safe side it is not worth collecting rocks un less you can be 110% sure it has never been poluted.

Think is it actually worth the risk to save a few $$$

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
