I would also buy a spare you can count on it to break down just at the wrong time. Two is certainly the best way to go. Stay well away from the cheepies they will work but for how long and how effective. I believe Tetra also make a good heater. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I've had great luck with them, but not with the Tetra Whisper I used. As far as wattage, that sounds good to me. The two heaters will be better than one, like Keith said. |

However, they've stopped producing them over two years ago so the ones you find won't be replenishing themselves. They're high quality, and very reliable. As mentioned above, sera and visi-therm (stealth models especially) are also reliable brands, as are Rena-Cal excels. |

They keep a steady, accurate temperature, they are very heavy duty, and I personally think they are more attractive than many other heaters. Two heaters would definitely make your tank a mare even, stable temperature overall, but my not be necessary. One 200 watt heater in my 65 gallon tank keeps thing nice and stable for me. If you have a 4' or longer tank, two heaters may be the way to go. If you are using a cannister filter, I've also heard some very good reviews of the in-line heaters from Mardel (I think, it might be Rena). It would mean less equipment in your tank. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, The general rule of thumb is that the heater(s) total wattage should be 5 watts/gallon. 55x5=275, I'd say that depending upon the location of the tank (near a outside wall, a furnace output, a window) the 250 watts would be acceptable in most circumstances. Visitherm Stealth is by far my favorite, I just wish there was a tiny LED when it is on. I know the idea is to be easy to camoflage but listening for the clicking on and off is hard. I always go with 2 undersized heaters if the tank is decent sized. One sticks on it can't cook the tank and the other will stay off. If one fails and stays off the fish don't get chilled. minnow |
