One of the batteries in my emergency air pump has leaked everywhere. I've cleaned up what I could, but it appears to have made some light green stuff on one of the contacts. Can this be removed or is it safe to just leave it there?

Hi,
You need to clean off that light green stuff.
It is probably a copper oxide and will corrode the
contacts. Many times, especially today with the current
price of copper, they simply copper plate some metal and
use them as contacts. The leakage from the old batteries
will corrode the contacts and eat the copper plating off.

Try a combination of baking soda paste and some fine
sandpaper, and then flush with warm water, and then dry
throughly.

When i was younger i worked in a camera shop we would just use rubber erasers to clean the battery contacts and it worked well.

Hi,
If they aren't too pitted/corroded, burnishing the contacts
with an eraser is a great idea.

Depending how deep the corosion is it should be able to scratch it off then use a small piece of glass paper (the small emery board (used for finger nails) will work.

Finally never leave batteries in any thing that is not regually used.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Some baking soda in water, use an old toothbrush to clean the corosion and rinse with water. Should be fine. If a toothbrush doesn't work I've also used a small brass brush. Also if I'm not mistaken the contacts are made of brass and not copper, could be wrong though.

They were used a fortnight ago, I'm not sure why this has decided to happen now?

(and on a complete tangent, why doesn't this happen to smoke alarm batteries?)

i think it is going to take more than an eraser, its fairly thick

Hi,
I've not seen a typical, box type, 9V battery leak like the
cylindrical 1.5V batteries. They are made differently.
However, if they could, they would.. Probably the thing
that prevents it from happening is that when a 9V battery
starts to loose power, it trips a low voltage alarm that
causes the smoke detector to CHIRP irritatingly until we
change the battery out. Thus they never get that old.

PS... Whats a FORTNIGHT?
