Leaky Battery | |
Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | One of the batteries in my emergency air pump has leaked everywhere. I've cleaned up what I could, but it appears to have made some light green stuff on one of the contacts. Can this be removed or is it safe to just leave it there? |

Many times, especially today with the current price of copper, they simply copper plate some me use them as contacts. The leakage from the old batteries will corrode the contacts and eat the copper plating off. Try a combination of baking soda paste and some fine sandpaper, and then flush with warm water, and then dry throughly. Frank -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

Finally never leave batteries in any thing that is not regually used. If a toothbrush doesn't work I've also used a small brass brush. Also if I'm not mistaken the contacts are made of brass and not copper, could be wrong though. |

(and on a complete tangent, why doesn't this happen to smoke alarm batteries?) i think it is going to take more than an eraser, its fairly thick |

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, I've not seen a typical, box type, 9V battery leak like the cylindrical 1.5V batteries. They are made differently. However, if they could, they would.. Probably the thing that prevents it from happening is that when a 9V battery starts to loose power, it trips a low voltage alarm that causes the smoke detector to CHIRP irritatingly until we change the battery out. Thus they never get that old. Frank PS... Whats a FORTNIGHT? -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |
